Imaging had been smooth, but we had some glitches, and Symantec helped us apply the roll-up update. Since then, or thereabouts, when adding new clients, we get all the plugins, deployment, inventory, etc, but no Automation Folder. It is not in the NSCap path on the NS, only the PEUninstall.
How do I get it back so that it will deploy to my clients?
I would like to know if the DS server has to be domain joined for it to work effectively. I have a situation where I can have the server on the network but not joined to the domain. I seem to be having some issue deploying the agents. Has anyone encountered this situation?
Hello all. I'm noticed on a few systems I just imaged that after they reboot to production they have the DNS servers set statically in TCP/IP settings. Which is not something we would like since if they plug in at home they won't be able to hit the internet. Normally our systems are all set for DHCP. Now i'm not sure if the image was set that way or if their is a setting in Altiris 7.1 that is setting that. I wasn't the one who setup our environment and I just noticed it today with the last 3 systems I imaged. Is this something that could be sent on the SMP server for Images that are deployed? I've been looking around and don't see anything that stands out.
What is the best way to delete/remove old PCT packages? I'm using the Deployment Solution 7.1 SP2.
I am not able to find anything regarding VBE files. We are moving from 6.9 to 7.1 and the VBE files that previously worked are having issues now. I am wondering if they are supported at all?
WE have a site in India that needs to have a site server set up and my network admin has asked how much bandwidth will be needed for the site server. We have 1 NS site server in North AMerica and 15 other site servers at locations through out North America.
I explained what a site server is and does to him but he still comes back with
How much BW do you need for the local server to work? Can anyone tell me this?
I'm placing an order with a supplier for some PCs. As part of the deal, they are imaging the machines for us off site with an altiris captured ghost image supplied by us.
Do I just give them a copy of our altiris image that I would normally use for deployment or am I best creating a new image without the Symantec Management Agent installed?
I wasn't sure whether there would be any implications in an image being deployed by an outside company (probably not using altiris) as the Altiris sysprep & imaging process will not be followed ... (will this make a mess of the machine?!)
Do any of you have this kind of arrangement with hardware suppliers? - how do you do it?
We have DS 7.1 if it makes any difference, deploying Windows 7 enterprise with a custom sysprep oobe unattend.xml.
I'm going to have a play tomorrow to see if I can deploy our existing image using ghost via the exe (like restoring a machine backup) without any sysprep/altiris automation and see what happens. I don't know fully what the "prepare image for capture" task does, or what state the image is in after it runs.
Any comments appreciated! I have to take the image to the supplier on Wednesday!!
Hi, we currently have a Windows 7 32 bit image, the time has come for us to create a 64 bit image.
I've "re-captured" an image and deployed that before, but never setup a PC to capture.
What do I need to do exactly? I've read a few pages, eg https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/deployment-solution-7x-imaging-windows-7 and http://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/deployment-solution-beginning-part-1 but they don't mention how to prepare the base image to capture, just assume you alredy have it ready.
Here's what I'm planning and confused about.
Create new VM, attach Windows 7 SP1 64 bit ISO from datastore
Start VM and go through Windows setup, does the account or name I enter matter? Can that be removed later? Do I need to activate Windows now?
I'll need to log on and join our domain to install the SMA, do I want to insall all the plug-ins now? eg pcAnywhere, Softare Management, Inventory, Arellia agents. I know I need Deployment Solution, do I manually install that? Or just wait until the SMA installs it?
(one page I read said not to join the base image to the domain, then how would I get the SMA on there and get it showing in SMC to run the capture job?)
One problem we have is about 8 Polices with Windows Workstations as the target, I don't want these to install on my base VM, is turning them off the only way to achieve this?
Once I have my base image the way I want it (Windows up to date etc), I then run the capture image job which I can then deploy.
There is also no mention of drives on these pages, we are currently using a vbs script that runs after the deploy image task, it finds the PC model and copies the matching folder from NS to the PC, then our unattend.xml file references this path (c:\drivers) in the offlineServicing and auditSystem passes.
The other step that is missing is creating the unattend.xml, I assume this is just the same as if creating for Windows Deployment Services, using WSIM?
Thanks for any assistance. (I was suprised how useless the Deployment Solution 7.1 3 hour online Symantec Training was, it didn't cover this at all.
Background: We run a DS 6.9 for Windows XP and Windows Embedded imaging (rarely used as we are migrating to Win7). We use 7.1 for Win7 imaging and software management.
Situation: About 2 weeks ago an incident occurred where every computer in DS 6.9 was accidentally selected and a Power Control Restart was initiated on them causing about 2/3 (3000 computers) of the computers in our enviroment to reboot all at once and cause a boot storm on our domain controllers. Once we diagnosis what happened, our DS 6.9 server was unplugged from the network and shutdown to prevent any more computers from restarting. This is the second occurance of this happening this year, so upper management was needless to say unpleased.
Question: We still need this server for managing our thin clients, and in the rare case we need to image a PC to Windows XP. Since turning this server on is a touchy subject with management due to the foul taste they have from the boot storm, we want to make sure by turning this server on that no residual reboots are going to occur. We know that a Power Control Reboot is considered a "Live Event". So the question is if a live event does not execute at the time it is requested (say the computer was turned off), will it attempt to execute when the computer is active or does the Live event essentially die?
Is it possible to have PCTransplant capture the personality of the Primary user only in a deployment job? There will be a few domain accounts which we dont need to transfer and it would speed up the process.
We are a large K-12 shool district and use the Altiris Deployment Center. Here's our problem.
When we attempt to run a job through Altiris that requires the machine to restart, the computer will not restart if the screensaver is active. The screen saver will continue to run until you manually hit a key or move the mouse, at which time you will see the "Windows is shutting down..." bitmap. This will also complete the restart sequence and the machine will reboot. Since the screen saver nornally isn't active when you manually restart a computer, I'm sure this is a WinXP screen saver issue.
Has anyone else faced this or do you have a solution?
We are looking at the viability of transitioning from 6.9 to 7.1 DS and we are running into some apparent feature diconnects. One big one is the lack of a location within 7.1 script tasks to pass additional parameters, via the "additional command-line switches" task option.
I haven't been able to find any information around how this is dealt with in 7.1. I am guessing there must be some simple answer that I am just not seeing.
Anyone have any input on this?
At them moment I have a script that sends an email to all tech support guys when a build completes. I would like to set it up so that only specific contacts are mailed depending on what site server did the build. anyone have any ideas/scripts for this ?
I'm in need of help with an automated altiris script that will install dagent and uninstall aclient in a windows 7 environment.
So here's my situation, I been handed down to manage Altiris Deployment Solution 6.9 within my company which involve of me capturing wim images to upload them into our altiris server. So the way I capture the images is I create a system image within the Windows 7 machine, once the system restore VHD file is created then I mount (Attach) it in Disk Management which creates another drive letter such as F: or G: then finally I capture with GimageX with the options Boot, Verify & Check. Which is very similar from this helpful video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH-tdUrEp-w
Once the .wim file is created I then upload the image within Altiris deployment server but here is when I get the problem when I reimage using the wim I created I get the following error:
Error: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might have caused the issue
This can be fixed by doing a repair using the Windows 7 installation cd but why is this happening?
Any thoughts or advices can be at great use,
When I run a prepare for image capture in DS 7.1 does it clear out client SID's for a clean windows 7 image?
The ones I'm specifically looking to clear on image capture:
SEP, Altiris, HBSS, WSUS, SCCM
I would guess that HBSS would be a no, which is fine. I can handle that on my own. But I would think that it would handle the 2 Symantec Products and the two MS products. Any thoughts, ideas, facts?
I am evaluating Altiris Deployment Server 7.1 and I have a new build of the server, with no connected clients, using SQL server Express 2008. The SQL sever is also a new install and is located on the same server.
The problem is quite simple. I have very slow page load times, when using the DNS name of the server, but a great perfomance when using the IP
http://server/altiris/console/ <- Initial prompt for logon is immediate, but then the landing page takes 2 to 3 minutes to load
http://server/altiris/console/default.aspx<- same as above
http://server.internl.domain.name.com/altiris/console/<- <- same as above
http://serveripaddress/altiris/console/<- Perfectly acceptable performance using IP address
Can anyone help with next steps for a solution?
I am running DS 6.9 SP5 Build 517. Where can I find the latest downloads, MR, or SP for DS 6.9?
I seen on here a script for renaming Windows7 machine. Would anyone have one for Win7X64, as it didn't work on these systems.
I am currently trying to trying to capture a windows 7 image. I've put everything on it that I want on my image. Doing exact same thing I did last time when I was able to capture the image. Anyway, for some reason sysprep doesn't run and reboot pc to PXE. I have the Deploy.cabs for x86 and 64...but I think they are XP? Does this make sense? The guy that set all this up no longer works for the company so I was kind of thrown into this. So any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dwight
